Capers top V-Reds 5-1

(SYDNEY, N.S.) In a rematch of last season's AUS championship game, the Cape Breton University Capers posted a decisive 5-1 win over the CIS No. 4 ranked University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds Saturday in Sydney.

Justin Maheu, the reigning player of the year in both the CIS and AUS, opened the 2015 campaign right where he left off last season. The third-year striker potted a hat trick on opening day, scoring in the 18th, 41st and 70th minutes.

Rookies Daniel Pritchard in the 12th minute and Joel Eskert-Ayensa in the 58th minute rounded out the scoring for the Capers, who controlled the contest from start to finish.

Jacob Goudy was the lone member of the Varsity Reds to find the score sheet, scoring in the 36th minute.

Scott Shewfelt picked up the win for the Capers making eight saves.

CBU (1-0-0) will return to action Sunday when then face Moncton (0-0-1) in a 3:15 p.m. start in Sydney. UNB (0-1-0) will look to bounce back when they square off with StFX (0-0-1) in Antigonish.
