(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS are excited that Gardiner MacDougall has been temporarily enlisted by the Saint John Sea Dogs to assist them in their Memorial Cup efforts.
MacDougall, who’s led the REDS to seven Canadian university men’s hockey championships and ten Atlantic University Sport titles, has joined the Sea Dogs as their interim head coach. He’ll serve in that role as Saint John hosts the 2022 Memorial Cup, June 20-29, and will return to his duties with the REDS upon completion of the tournament.
About to begin his 23rd season as head coach of the REDS, one of the country’s most successful and prestigious men’s university hockey programs, MacDougall has amassed more than 400 regular season victories and 14 consecutive Atlantic University Sport regular season pennants.
During MacDougall’s temporary absence, associate coach Rob Hennigar will assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the REDS men’s hockey program.
Hennigar, entering his ninth season as the team’s associate coach, has helped guide UNB to three national championships after winning one as a student-athlete, in 2007.
The REDS and the University of New Brunswick wish Coach MacDougall, the Sea Dogs and Sea Dogs’ fans all the best during the upcoming Canadian Hockey League championship tournament.
