(MONTREAL, QC) Stephen Anderson(Morell, PE) scored shorthanded, at 11:32 of the third period, as the visiting UNB Varsity Reds skated to a 1-0 victory over McGill, in preseason men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

The Varsity Reds are looking to defend their national championship title, after having captured the University Cup last year. They ended the regular season ranked first in the CIS, while McGill was ranked seventh.

UNB held a dramatic 34-16 advantage in shots, including a 13-2 edge in the final frame. McGill goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard(Sherbrooke, QC) made 33 saves in a losing cause. He was perfect until midway through the third period, when a pass from Mark Simpson(Rothesay, NB) found Anderson on a breakaway.

Both teams went 0-for-7 on the power play, although McGill gave up the crucial shorthanded goal. It was the second shorthanded goal allowed by the Redmen in four exhibition contests.

Etienne Marcoux and Alex Dubeau shared netminding duties for UNB. Marcoux kicked aside all 12 pucks faced in 31:17, before being replaced by Dubeau, who was only called upon to make four saves to collect the win.

The Redmen, who fell to 2-2, continue their preseason schedule with a rematch against Université de Québec à Trois-Rivières, on Sunday. at McConnell Arena.

UNB, now 2-0 in pre-season play, visits the Merrimack College(NCAA) on October 1st.
