UNB Advances To AUS Final

(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) The UNB Varsity Reds got off to a lightning quick start, scoring three first period goals in a 4-0 win over the UPEI Panthers.

The win gives UNB a three-games-to-none victory over UPEI in their best of five Subway AUS semi-final series.

It also secures a spot in the CIS University Cup national championship tournament, in Halifax.

Philippe Halley scored two of those first period goals, the first just 2:10 into the opening frame. That goal proved to be the game winner, and the Varsity Reds never looked back.

Stephen Anderson also scored for UNB, while Tyler Carroll added a goal and two assists.

Etienne Marcoux made 25 saves to earn the shutout.

Mavric Parks started in goal for the Panthers, but was pulled after Halley's second goal of the night gave the visitors a 3-0 edge. Parks allowed three goals on just 13 shots.

Matt Mahalak came on in relief. He gave up Carroll's goal, but stopped the other 18 shots he faced.

The Varsity Reds outshot the Panthers 32-25.

With the win, UNB advances to the AUS final.

Who UNB will meet in that series is still to be determined.

The Saint Mary's Huskies beat the St. FX X-Men 4-0, Monday evening, to push that semi-final series to a fourth game.

The X-Men lead the best of three series two games to one.

Game four in that series will be played Wednesday night, in Halifax.
