(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS field hockey team wrapped up their season, finishing in 5th place at the Atlantic University Field Hockey Championship, in Halifax this past weekend.

In their first game to open the playoffs, the REDS dropped a 2-1 decision to the Saint Mary’s Huskies in the AUFH quarterfinal, sending UNB to the consolation round.

Despite the Huskies scoring two quick goals to start, the REDS never gave up and pushed hard in the second half, getting on the board with a goal from Sophie Jardine.

Following the loss to the Huskies, in their first consolation round game, the REDS beat the Mount Allison Mounties 1-0.

Kailla Wood got UNB on the board with a goal in the first half and the tired REDS were able to push through and play hard defence to keep the ball in the Mounties end most of the second half to help secure the win.

UNB would then head into Sunday afternoon with their sights set on coming out on top of the consolation round against STFX.

Once again, after Jardine netted her second goal of the weekend, UNB continued their strong play on defence to keep the X-Women offense at bay.

With only minutes left to play, UNB was able to cause a penalty stroke which allowed veteran Cassie Doiron to add an insurance goal and the REDS registered a 2-0 win.

The REDS will be losing four student-athletes to graduation, Doiron, Abbie Martin, Eleonore Gravel and Hannah Van Brenk.

“Being a member of this team since 2018 has made my last game a bittersweet moment,” said Doiron. “As sad as I am to go, I am able to look back on all that the team has accomplished and the amazing people I have met through field hockey.”

“Many memories have been made over the years that I will never forget, and I am so grateful to have been a part of such a great team! The program has been continuously improving and I can't wait to see what UNB Field Hockey will do in the future.”
