(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS are celebrating some impressive rookie showings at the U SPORTS Women’s Cross Country Championship, in Halifax.

First-year REDS Sierra Rodrigues and Georgia Bernhard finished 50th and 66th respectively in the field of 150.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to be able to run U SPORTS as a first year and share this experience with my teammates,” said Rodrigues, named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team.

“The conditions definitely made the race more challenging, but we stayed strong and pushed through. I’m proud of what we were able to do.”

“It was an exciting result for Sierra, finishing as our top runner and part of the national all-rookie team,” said REDS head coach Chris Belof. “Georgia’s finish was equally as exciting for our women’s program. She narrowly missed all-rookie status.”

Hilary Bishop was 69th for UNB, while Emily Doucet was 76th and Eve Carreau, another rookie, ran 115th in the field of 150.

The race was won by UBC’s Glynis Sim, while Laval won the women’s team title.

The event, hosted by the Dalhousie Tigers, was run in the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole.

Rain and wind pelted participants throughout the day.

“I knew it was going to be tough to run against the top runners,” said Rodrigues. “I’m happy with how things turned out.”
