(BOSTON, Mass.) Lexie Shannon, of the UNB Reds women’s track and field team qualified for the U SPORTS Championships, at a recent meet in Boston.

Competing at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic, Shannon registered 11.85 metres in the women’s Triple Jump. The U SPORTS qualifying standard is 11.82 metres.

The jump was a personal best for Shannon and a new UNB Reds record.

She is currently the top-ranked women’s Triple Jumper in Atlantic University Sport and 2nd in the U SPORTS rankings.

Shannon also established a new personal best in the women’s Long Jump, with a leap of 5.31 metres.

Victoria LeBlanc went 11.38 metres in the women’s Triple Jump, a new personal best.

In the women’s 3000 metres, Hannah Cormier established a new Reds record and personal best, finishing in a time of 10:30.48.

“Boston is a high-performance meet with very high caliber competition,” said Reds head coach Chris Belof. “It takes a lot of our athletes outside of their comfort zone and prepares them for what to expect at a national championship caliber competition. I was very impressed with how our women's group responded to that challenge.”

“Lexie Shannon's triple jump performance was very impressive,” said Belof. “Additionally, both Victoria LeBlanc and Hannah Cormier had strong performances that set them both up well in the AUS.”

While her teammates were in Boston, UNB’s Sydney MacDonald was in Montreal, competing in the pentathlon at the McGill Team Challenge.

MacDonald had numerous bests, finishing with a score of 3010 points.

She is currently ranked 2nd in the women’s pentathlon in the AUS and 13th in U SPORTS.
