(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s soccer team is adding some international flavour in 2022, welcoming midfielder Helen Langrehr, from Munich, Germany, in a transfer from Brandon University.
The 19-year-old has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022 Atlantic University Sport season.
“Helen had a strong first year in Canada, at Brandon, where she was an all-star and team captain,” said REDS head coach Jon Crossland. “Her game will transfer really well to the AUS.”
Langrehr helped the Bobcats to an 8-1-1 record during the 2021 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Association regular season, and a 1-1 record in the conference playoffs.
Langrehr started all 12 regular season and playoff games for the Bobcats, scoring four goals.
“Helen is a versatile midfielder that can distribute the ball really well, and is not afraid to take chances on goal," said Crossland. "Her playing style and personality will fit really well here. The international student-athletes that we’ve had over the years like Laura McNicholas, Lucy Parkin, Abby Sullivan, and Coralia Monteroso have all succeeded on the field and in the classroom. They all had a big impact on our program.”
“I hope to bring a bit of my European style of play to the team,” said Langrehr. “I’m a consistent and reliable teammate on and off the field, and always want what is best for the team.”
Before arriving in Brandon, Langrehr played high school and club level soccer in Germany.
She was part of soccer and futsal teams that competed at tournaments throughout Europe, and helped her Munich high school to back-to-back city league championships in 2017 and 2018.
A multi-sport athlete, she was also a member of the school’s championship-winning track and field team.
Between 2019 and 2021, Langrehr attended the Munich Soccer School, an all-boys training academy.
“The REDS offer outstanding athletic resources and facilities,” she said. “Most importantly, I feel like Coach Crossland and the team will be a good fit for me, and I can see the program going far in the next few years.”
“It speaks to the quality of academic programming at UNB and lifestyle of Fredericton when students from around the world are choosing our school for their studies,” said Coach Crossland. “We’re getting a team captain, a strong student, and a quality person and athlete. We’re excited to see Helen’s contributions during her REDS career.”
“My overall goal is to help the team wherever I can,” said Langrehr. “In the long run, I’d love to help the team win a national title.”
Langrehr will study Science, specifically Mathematics and Statistics, while attending UNB.
