(WOLFVILLE, NS) The UNB REDS evened a season-opening weekend road trip with a hard fought 1-0 win over the host Acadia Axewoman on Sunday afternoon.

The REDS lost Saturday, 2-1 at Dalhousie.

Jillian Larose (Ottawa, ON) netted the game winner in the 39th minute.

With a nice feed from teammate Madison Goertz (Saskatoon, SK), Larose was alone to send a low corner shot past rookie Axewomen keeper Melina Ramirez (New Minas, NS) for the lone goal of the match.

The Reds were outshot 16-4, and REDS' keeper Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK) kept her team in the lead with several phenomenal saves, including 12 stops in the second half.

"We just asked for more of the intangible things. More energy, more grit, to be in on the battles a little bit more than yesterday," said REDS head coach Jon Crossland. "We just wanted more passion out of them. Technically we can do it, we just have to fight for it."

The Axewomen pushed hard in the second half but Nash was the key to keeping the attack at bay.

"It was frustrating when we have so many shots and we didn't get one in the net," said Acadia captain Lauren Jodrey (Bedford, NS). "It was a good game on our part since we had most of possession. It was frustrating not to get the finishes. We're not mad at ourselves, we're just frustrated that we didn't win."

UNB's Olivia Rowinski (Fredericton, NB) was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The Axewomen are on the road next weekend, at Mount Allison on Friday evening and UPEI on Saturday.

UNB returns home to host Cape Breton Saturday and St FX on Sunday. Both games take place on the turf at Fredericton's Willie O'Ree Place Complex.
