(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds women’s soccer team is adding veteran winger Cynthia Smith to their recruiting class of 2019.

The 19-year-old Smith, from Laval, QC, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the Reds beginning in the 2019-20 season.

She comes to UNB after a full season with the College Montmorency Nomades.

“We’re excited about adding Cynthia to our group,” said Reds head coach Jon Crossland. “She has experience in good CEGEP and club programs during her career which is a good fit for where our program is at right now, with our core group being older.”

Smith played in all ten of the Nomades games last season.

Previously, she played at College Ahuntsic, another CEGEP school, and has been a member of some of Quebec’s top club programs.

“I think I can bring a good energy to the field with my leadership and my positivity,” said Smith. “I strongly believe I can be of great help to the team with my competitive spirit.”

After a disappointing 2018 season, Crossland feels Smith and the other members of his recruiting class can help get the Reds back on track.

“We had a great winter, and summer has been going well, which should set us up well for a successful fall,” he said. “Attracting student-athletes like Cynthia, who is excited about the commitment to win here at UNB, is a great thing for our program as we move closer to the season.”

Smith will study nursing while attending UNB.

“I have set a goal to be part of the starting line-up,” said Smith. “I also intend to be a part of the best defensive line in the league which allows the least goals.”

Smith joins Fredericton’s Olivia Rowinski and Allie Hughes-Goyette, of Squamish, BC, in the Reds 2019 recruiting class.
