(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the MTA Mounties 2-0 in regular season action, at BMO Centre.

After going without a goal last weekend, UNB scored nine goals this weekend while not conceding any.

Head coach Jon Crossland was pleased with the nine goal weekend. "We dedicate lots of time on finishing in training, it's definitely our main focus."

The Varsity Reds came out strong in the first half Sunday, winning the majority of balls and exercising control.

In the 12th minute, Courtney Strba got open in the 18-yard box with the ball. Her quick strike made it 1-0 for the home side.

Six minutes later, Strba defeated three MTA defenders and beat the Mountie's goaltender again, this time with a 30-yard shot to the top of the net.

Strba's efforts did not go unnoticed by Crossland, who believes Strba has been a leading force in recent games. "She has been playing really well for us," said Crossland. "She is tricky and technical enough to beat players and then see that the goalkeeper is out. It was a great goal and a needed goal for us."

While the second half was scoreless, the Mounties had a few chances, but could not beat UNB's Sami Jo Bell (Halifax, NS). Bell has allowed just two goals in six games.

Crossland acknowledges the importance of Bell's presence on the pitch. "She is a very good goaltender, great at stopping shots, but one of her best attributes is that she communicates and organizes everyone. It helps our team a lot."

UNB's Courtney Strba (Windsor Junction, NS) and MTA's Hannah Brison (Falmouth, NS) were named Subway players of the game.

UNB will travel to Wolfville to face Acadia on Friday, October 25th. The VReds play their final home game of the season, against UPEI, on Sunday, November 1st.
