UNB defeats SMU in women's soccer

(FREDERICTON, N.B.) The UNB Varsity Reds women's soccer team defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 4-0 in regular season action at the BMO Field in Fredericton.

UNB's win marks the first for the Varsity Reds this season. They now stand with one win and three ties in four games. The Huskies now stand with a record of 1-2-1.

UNB started strong, gaining the majority of the possession in the first half. They had many strong chances but UNB could not seem to find the back of the net until the 35th minute when UNB's Laura McNicholas (Doncaster, UK) met the end of a cleanly placed corner kick by Lucy Parkin (Sheffield, UK).

The Varsity Reds did not slow down and began the second half with a goal by UNB's Lucy Parkin (Sheffield, UK) who struck the ball from 35 yards and found the back of the net. UNB continued their scoring streak with two more goals with Lauren Cubbon (Saskatoon, SK) and Paige Vincent (Dartmouth, NS) both scoring one.

Player of the Game for UNB was Lucy Parkin (Sheffield, UK) and for SMU Mikailee Vincent (Dartmouth, NS). Parkin who is a solid force for UNB, scored her first goal as a Varsity Red in today's match.

UNB's head coach Jon Crossland thought the game was positive for his team, "Right from our energy, the way we fought for each other, encouraged each other and then with the play as well. We created a lot of goal scoring opportunities."

Parkin is excited about the performance displayed by the Varsity Reds today. "We've been struggling to get into the final third but we've been working on it in training and it finally came through today. Once we broke the line we managed to put four away."

UNB will travel to PEI on Friday September 25th to face the Panthers at 5pm.

SMU will host the Dalhousie Tigers at the same time.
