UNB finishes the weekend with a 3-1 win over Moncton

For only the seventh time in the 19 years of the team's existence, UNB's Varsity Reds women's soccer team has clinched a berth in the AUS Championship.

This news came after a six-point weekend for the Varsity Reds, who bested the UPEI Panthers 2-1 on Friday night and went on to beat Université de Moncton 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

UNB opened up the scoring on Sunday when striker Lauren Cubbon found the net at around the 38th minute with an assist from Samantha Lagacy. This is the second goal of the season for Cubbon, who hails from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The Varsity Reds posted their second goal of the game around minute 60. Samantha Lagacy drove it in, racking up her seventh goal this season. The assist went to Erin Bethune.

Moncton got on the board not long afterwards. At 62:31, Vickie Savoie got one past V-Reds goalkeeper Rebecca Duda

The third goal for UNB came right around minute 80, when Moncton had an unfortunate tap-in at their own net.

UNB head coach Jonathan Crossland says seeing two wins right now is great news.

"They were a bit of scrappy wins, which is good especially at this time of year, " Crossland said. "We're finding ways to score goals in different ways and get the victory."

The Varsity Reds play their last two games of the regular season on this coming Wednesday and Friday. Crossland says the team will look to the depth of their roster to make sure they get enough rest and a good preparation for the upcoming AUS Championship.

"Emma Quigley rested today. She's played every single minute of every single game so far and we didn't lose a beat with Emily Sarty in there," Crossland said. "We also rotated three midfielders through, and it's the same thing. It's a comfortable spot to be where you know you can do that without dropping off."

UNB plays next on Wednesday, October 22, when they host Mount Allison at 5pm.

Université de Moncton plays SMU on October 25 at 1pm.
