UNB ends 30-game unbeaten streak for CBU

A 30-game regular season unbeaten streak was brought to end on BMO Field today when the Varsity Reds women's soccer team came back from behind to trump the CBU Capers 3-2.

The Capers, who topped last year's AUS rankings and placed fourth at the national championships, had not lost a regular season game since October 21, 2011.

But that streak is now over, after a re-energized Varsity Red squad came back from a scoreless first half with three goals in the last 25 minutes of the game.

The first half belonged to the Capers, with two goals from striker Karolyne Blain.  The first goal came in the 19th minute with an assist from Shanice Maxwell.  Around the 41st minute Blain found the net again, demonstrating why she was named CBU's Female Athlete of the Year for 2013-14.

In the second half, it was a different story. The Varsity Reds came on strong and midfielder Eden Vanderlaan scored their first goal in the 65th minute.

A second goal from Kayla Painter followed around the 82nd minute. And in the dying moments of the match, at the 90th minute, Paige Vincent scored the game-winning third goal.

The Varsity Reds are now 3-0 in regular season action.  Head coach Jonathan Crossland says he's pleased with the results and hopes the trend continues tomorrow when UNB plays Acadia.

"If you look at the first four games [for us] in the season, those are a hard first four games," Crossland said. "So to be 3-0 now is a plus, and if we can get one tomorrow that would be fantastic topping."

Paige Vincent was awarded player of the game.

The Varsity Reds host Acadia at 1pm on Sunday, September 14.

Cape Breton will play Moncton at the same time.
