REDS Fall In Final
(ANTIGONISH, NS) UNB's run as Atlantic University Sport women's hockey champions is over. The three-time defending champs fell 2-1 to the STFX X-Women Wednesday night in game two of their 2025 AUS Championship Series. The X-Women win the title two-games-to-none.
Kamdyn Switzer (Stittsville, ON) scored the game-winning goal, her second game-winner of the series. Switzer was named the AUS Playoff MVP.
The first period was tense, and while STFX led in shots, the REDS saw some solid scoring chances turned aside by X-Women goalie Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB). The home side enjoyed a pair of late power-plays, and it was Landyn Pitts (Antigonish, NS) who potted the opening marker three seconds before intermission, tipping home a Mackenzie Lothian (Alliston, ON) point shot.
Josie Chisholm (Antigonish, NS) got the REDS on the board halfway through the second period though, banging in her own rebound after a pass from Jorja Nystrom (Leduc, AB).
The tension then built with every chance in the third period before Switzer's goal with six minutes to play.
UNB pulled Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) in favour of an extra attacker, and Switzer almost scored again but hit the post. A face-off in the STFX zone with one minute to go led to a flurry of UNB chances but Zak, who finished with 20 saves, kept the door closed.
McCallum received REDS player of the game honors for her 31 save performance, while Pitts was player of the game for STFX.
The X win could be seen as a measure of revenge as it was the REDS who beat the X-Women in the past three championship series.
STFX and UNB are now both headed to the U SPORTS Championship in Waterloo, running March 20-23.
