(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds women’s hockey team has added Fredericton native Hilary Cashin to their recruiting class of 2019.

She’s signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the Reds beginning in the 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport season.

The 22-year-old goaltender has returned home after three seasons at the University of New Hampshire and is excited about being part of the reborn Reds.

“I’m excited to finally have the opportunity to play hockey in my hometown again,” said Cashin. “It’ll be great playing in front of my family and friends, and to be part of the new era of UNB women’s hockey.”

Cashin’s high school hockey resume includes stints with the Fredericton High School Black Kats and New Hampton Prep School’s Huskies.

In three seasons at UNH, Cashin saw action in 32 games, posting a 13-10-1 record, a 2.76 goals against average, and a .900 save percentage.

“Hilary is a competitive goalie who takes away opportunities with strong positioning, and who competes on every shot,” said Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth. “She has a great work ethic and has some leadership qualities that we’re excited to explore with her. Hilary already believes in the goals and values that we laid out in year one, and it’s exciting to bring in a player that sees success here at UNB.”

Cashin is studying Business Administration while attending UNB.

The 2019-20 season will also be the first, in the line-up, for forward Frederike Cyr.

She was with the team during the 2018-19 season, but did not play or use eligibility after transferring from l’Université de Montreal following the 2017-18 season.

“I’m thrilled to finally have the opportunity to compete for a spot in the line-up this upcoming season,” said Cyr. “I believe red-shirting was the best thing that could have happened to me. It allowed me to take a step back and really focus on certain individual skills which I needed to work on, which ultimately made me improve significantly. It allowed me to improve on the ice, and ended up being a great learning experience.”

“Fred is an aggressive player and will fit nicely in our core of forwards,” said Hilworth. “Her determination and her extreme work ethic will be exciting to watch as she is of the belief that nothing can stop her. I’m excited to see her finally pull on the Reds jersey.”

Cyr is studying Psychology.

Cashin and Cyr join defender Lindsey Smith, from the Northern Subway Selects, of the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League, as well as defender Marley Van Den Oetelaar and forward Sydney Oitomen, both of the Ontario Provincial Women’s Hockey League, in the Reds second recruiting class.
