(FREDERICTON, NB) Frederike Cyr (Candiac, QC), Lily George (Garden Village, ON) and Katherine Chadwick (Kanata, ON) had a goal and an assist each as the UNB Reds defeated l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 7-2 on Friday night.
George was named Subway Player of the Game after another strong offensive effort.
"It is not an individual effort, the whole team works together. I'm just focusing on my game, really helping support everyone on the ice and just doing the best I can to help the team out," said George.
Jenna MacLean (Wilcox, SK), Ashley Stratton (Mount Pearl, NL) and Paige Grenier (Olds, AB) each added two assists in the win.
UNB improves to 6-and-3 on the season while Moncton falls to 2-and-7.
The Reds struck first, just over three minutes into the first period with Amanda Desrochers (St. Francois Xavier, MB) putting a shot on net, creating a rebound that was banged home by George for a 1-0 lead.
UNB's momentum would carry through the period with multiple chances.
With just over five minutes left, Sydney DesRochers (Woodstock, NB) tipped home a point shot from MacLean to give the Reds a 2-0 lead.
UNB would pick up right where they left off in the second period, with Tamina Kehler (Chilliwack, BC) putting a snapshot five-hole on Moncton goalie Melodie Arsenault (Acadiaville, NB) to extend the lead to 3-0 just 1:26 in.
Hanna Matchett (Nanton, AB) made it 4-0 about three minutes later, skating through multiple Moncton defenders and picking the top corner.
Moncton would finally respond, on the power-play, two minutes later off a hard shot from Gabrielle Saulnier (Memramcook, NB) to make it 4-1.
Emilie Lalancette (St. Andrews West, ON) would add another to cut the Reds lead to 4-2.
UNB would rebound and restore the four-goal cushion by the end of the frame with a pair of quick goals from Chadwick and Cyr to make it 6-2.
"I thought that the bench was the real reason why we made it through that, got back on track and carried on," said Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth. "I think it's another feather in the cap of our leadership group to get the team refocused and back on it. Other than that, I thought it was pretty much our game the whole time."
Sage McElroy-Scott (Morden, MB) would add one more for the Reds in the third for a 7-2 final.
"I think we have to have a short memory here, too, gathering the successes we had in the game but utilizing it for next time because its just going to get harder," said Hilworth.
Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, BC) made 12 saves in the win for the Reds while Arsenault made 19 saves in a losing effort for Moncton.
The Reds play their next game on the road against the Dalhousie Tigers, next Saturday at 7:00pm.
Les Aigles Bleues head home and host the St. Thomas Tommies on Saturday.
