(OTTAWA, ON) Friday was a learning day for the REDS women’s curling team, in Ottawa.

At the qualifying event for the 2023 FISU Winter Games, UNB’s Jenna Campbell rink dropped an 8-6 decision to Regina and a hard-fought 10-7 match to Waterloo.

“We made a few strategic and execution errors late in the game against Regina,” said Campbell. “We also weren’t able to capitalize on their misses. Against Waterloo, we had a strong start, but when they scored in the sixth (end), it changed everything.”

Friday’s losses left the REDS 0-and-4 headed into their final round robin game on Saturday, against Atlantic University Sport rival Dalhousie.

“It would’ve been nice to win those games,” said UNB lead Kirsten Donovan. “We’re still feeling good and are grateful for this experience.”

The REDS will be one of three teams that will not advance to the playoffs. Only the top three will move on.

The FISU Winter World University Games take place in Lake Placid, New York, January 12-22, 2023.

“We’ve learned a lot about managing distractions and blocking things that may hinder our focus during a game,” said Campbell. “We’ve also solidified and gelled so much as a team since being in Ottawa, learning lots about each other and how to support each other during a game situation.”
