(FREDERICTON, NB) It’s ‘Think Pink Weekend’ for the UNB Reds.

The fund-raising initiative for the Canadian Cancer Society, funnelled through U SPORTS ‘Shoot for the Cure’ program, has become an annual event at UNB.

This will be the 13th year that UNB has run ‘Think Pink’ events.

This year, ‘Think Pink’ will involve five teams, playing eight separate events over three days.

The Reds women’s and men’s volleyball teams kick the weekend off on Friday, with games that have been dubbed ‘Dig for the Cure’ games. Women’s hockey hosts their ‘Pink in the Rink’ game on Saturday afternoon. And the women’s and men’s basketball teams will play ‘Shoot for the Cure’ games on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The highlight of ‘Think Pink Weekend’ will come at half-time of Saturday’s men’s basketball game, against the Cape Breton Capers, when two members of the women’s basketball team will have their hair cut at centre court. The hair will be donated to the ‘Locks for Love’ program, which creates wigs for women who’ve lost their hair while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The players, Mikaela Dodig and Jolianne Guay, have set up on-line donation pages to accompany their actions. You can donate here:

At all events, throughout the weekend, 50-50 draws will be held, with proceeds going to the combined ‘Think Pink’ total.

UNB Basketball alumni will participate in a 3-point shooting contest, where pledges will be accepted.

The volleyball teams will be accepting ‘donations for digs,’ and the women’s hockey team will raffle off one of their pink jerseys.

Other items being raffled off include two baskets of fantastic pink items, a handmade pink quilt with matching pillows, a large pink stuffed animal, three giant cookies with pink M&M’s, a Beats Pill Bluetooth Speaker, a pink Wilson ‘Shoot For The Cure’ basketball, and a Valentine’s Day Package which includes a beautiful pink throw, Cineplex Odeon gift certificate, chocolates, a bottle of red wine, wine glasses, Apple Blossom Flowers gift certificate, a gift certificate to Sorella Hair Salon + Spa, gift certificate to East Side Mario’s, and a night at the Fredericton Inn.

In 2019, the Reds raised almost $7200 on ‘Think Pink Weekend.’

Since ‘Shoot for the Cure’ began in 2007, U SPORTS schools have raised more than $1.25 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.
