(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds are adding another home-grown talent to their recruiting class of 2020.

Forward Keira Rafferty, currently a member of the Riverview High School Royals, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the Reds ahead of the 2020-21 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Keira is a student-athlete we’ve had our eyes on for years,” said Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “We have not always been able to keep the best New Brunswick players home, but we were successful in this case. We are really, really excited that she’s chosen to join our program.”

Rafferty was a member of the Basketball New Brunswick team that went 3-and-3 at the 2019 Canadian U17 Women’s Basketball Championship, in Victoria, BC.

“I chose UNB because they have an excellent basketball program,” said Rafferty. “They have a great team connection, and they also do a lot for the community, which is something that I’m excited to be a part of.”

“My biggest strength is my versatility. I’m able to guard any position and enjoy that challenge” she said.

Rafferty has helped the Royals establish a 1-and-1 record in NBIAA “AAA” league play so far this season.

“Keira makes us better right away,” said Speedy. “She has great size, can guard every position, and can score inside and from the three-point line. She’s going to be a match-up problem for other teams.”

Rafferty will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
