Fudge To Join Reds

(FREDERICTON, NB) Sara Fudge, a 6’0” post, currently a member of the Fundy High School Mariners, will join the UNB Reds in the 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport season.

The St. George, NB, native has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent.

“We’re very excited that Sara chose to join our Reds women’s basketball program,” said Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “We love her size and the physical way she plays the game, but she brings so much more to the table. She’s a great student, a true leader and always puts the team first, all things we look for in a recruit but don’t always find.”

Fudge is no stranger to UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center, where the Reds play their home games.

She was a starter on New Brunswick’s U17 team that competed at the 2018 national basketball championship tournament, held at the Currie Center.

According to Speedy, Fudge is a blue-chip prospect. He feels she’s one of the best graduating high school players in the Maritimes, and arguably the best post player in the region’s class of 2019.

“Sara will have an impact on the court right away, and definitely fills a need that we have,” he said. “At the same time she has a really high ceiling with her best days still to come.”

“I’m eager to play higher intensity basketball with, and against, smarter, faster, and stronger athletes,” said Fudge. “What I look forward to most is being pushed by teammates, and becoming the best version of myself, mentally and physically, all while developing into a stronger player so I am able to contribute to the team in every way I can.”

Known for her physical play, Fudge is eager to use her size in a Reds uniform.

“I live for the tough battles under the net, guarding bigger and stronger athletes, and rebounding hard at both ends,” she said. “At this level, I will be able to, and have to, play as strong as I can all the time, which I look forward to.”

“I can’t wait to see her play with and learn from our older student-athletes next season,” said Speedy.

Fudge will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree while attending UNB, and has an eye on studying medicine upon graduation.
