Reds Hold Off Huskies

(HALIFAX, NS) Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON) scored 25 points in UNB's 83-76 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday, in Halifax.

The Huskies led 15-13 after 10 minutes, but the Reds outscored Saint Mary's 27-18 in a quick second quarter, on route to a 40-33 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw the Reds outscore the Huskies by eight, taking a 64-49 lead after thirty minutes.

The Huskies made the final quarter interesting.

Trailing 79-68 with 3:23 to play, SMU went on an 8-0 run to pull within three, 79-76, with 49 seconds left.

Dodig scored her only points of the quarter on two free throws with 13 seconds and UNB held on for the 83-76 win.

The Huskies' Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) poured in 24 points and added seven rebounds and five assists in the loss. The rookie guard's 38 minutes were the most logged on the night.

Ja'Yon Leak (Charlotte, NC) added 13 points for UNB, while Grace Simpson (Fredericton, NB) and Katie Daley (Fredericton, NB) scored 10 apiece.

With the win, the Reds improve to 7-and-6, while SMU is now 1-and-11.

Both teams return to action next weekend, with SMU at Acadia on Thursday. The Reds host St FX on Friday. Both tips are scheduled for 6:00pm.
