(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB Reds took the first game of a weekend series against the Memorial Sea-Hawks, Saturday, 87-79.

The first quarter saw the Reds firing on all cylinders, posting a whooping 33 points. They started on a 6-0 run and kept that momentum for the remainder of the quarter, building a 33-20 lead.

The second quarter was slightly better for the Hawks, but they could not establish any consistency. At the half, the Reds maintained their lead, 53-40.

The second half was more of the same for both teams. The Reds led 70-53 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was the defining quarter of the game. The Hawks had a fantastic 8-0 run against the Reds, but that late run was too little, too late.

UNB had three of their five starters score in double-digit figures, led by Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON), who scored 26 points and 11 assists, earning Subway Player of the Game honours.

Eva Tumwine (Fredericton, NB) added 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Grace Simpson (Fredericton, NB) had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Memorial's Sydney Stewart (London, ON) led all scorers with 31 points.

The Sea-Hawks and Reds clash again Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30am Atlantic.
