VReds Edge Axewomen In OT

(WOLFVILLE, NS) The second place UNB Varsity Reds earned an 84-82 win over the host Acadia Axewomen on Saturday, in overtime.

UNB outran the Axewomen to take the lead in the first half of the game.

Fourth year guard and Subway Player of the Game, Laura Kaye(Fredericton, NB), and point guard Grace Wade(Moncton, NB), led the Varsity Reds, finishing with 24 and 14 points respectively.

Acadia bounced back in the last two minutes of the third quarter.

Paloma Anderson(Phoenix, ARIZ.), Alexandra Berry(Yarmouth, NS), and Katie Ross(Halifax, NS) helped bring the score to 57-55 for UNB heading to the fourth.

Acadia continued to chip away at the UNB lead, pulling ahead 69-65 with three minutes remaining in regulation time.

The Axewomen and Varsity Reds ended regulation time tied 71-71.

After almost five minutes of overtime, Acadia led by two points with 18 seconds on the clock.

A well-executed three-point shot by Nicole Lafleur(Fredericton, NB) in the final ten seconds, along with with a game ending free throw, resulted in the 84-82 win for the Varsity Reds.

Anderson posted a game high 32 points, while Ross netted 19 points.

Acadia drops to 1-5, while the Varsity Reds hold onto second place in the AUS standings with a 5-1 record.

The Axewomen host Dalhousie this coming Thursday night. The VReds take on Dalhousie, on Saturday night in Fredericton.
