(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds downed the Memorial Sea-Hawks 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
The VReds won 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19, improving to 6-6 on the season.
The Sea-Hawks are now 0-12.
Memorial came out swinging, never falling too far behind the Varsity Reds.
UNB's 4-0 run to close the set 25-19 was the only significant break away.
The Sea-Hawks were hardly fazed, taking an early 3-0 lead in the second set.
The two teams then traded points until UNB went on a 5-0 run to build a 17-13 lead, on route to their 25-20 win.
Memorial started strong in the third set too, building a 5-1 lead.
The Varsity Reds recovered with a 6-0 run to go up 10-8.
A run of four straight points put UNB up 17-12, setting the table for their 25-19 victory.
Tristen Burridge(Fort St. John, BC) led the Varsity Reds with 12 kills, 3 aces and 7 digs.
Liam Power(Lower Sackville, NS) had 11 kills for Memorial, while Jordan Murray(Burlington, ON) registered 10 digs.
Despite another loss, Murray says the team can take something from the match.
"This was the first time this year we've finally come together as six," he said. "We've had a lot of good individual performances, but I think we finally found that point and I think we need to find a way to be at that point all the time."
Burridge, a senior hitter for the Varsity Reds, sees his team making progress too.
"It's important that we keep our level going up as the season goes on. These are good important games to prepare ourselves for more," said Burridge.
"These are the matches we want to be in with Memorial, matches that push us," said Varsity Reds head coach Dan McMorran.
"I thought MUN's level of play picked up again today. They're not the MUN of old. They're a team that's got some fire power and they've got a 'want' to win and they're dangerous."
Next up for the Varsity Reds, a trip to Halifax to face Dalhousie on Friday and Saturday.
Memorial will host Dal, on February 4th and 5th.
