(HALIFAX, NS) In one of two opening matches of the AUS-RSEQ men's volleyball interlock tournament at Dalhousie University, The Montreal Carabins beat the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1… 25-9, 22-25, 25-20, 25-12.

After trading points early in the first set, the Carabins went on an 11-point run on the serving of Olivier Riopel(Gatineau, QC) to secure a 19-5 lead. The Varsity Reds were plaqued by first set errors, giving Montreal the first set 25-9.

It was a different story in the second set, as UNB came onto the court with renewed enthusiasm.

In a tightly-contested set, both teams traded points and found themselves tied at 20. UNB's Samuel Alves(Melbourne, AUS) went on a three-point serving run to earn a 24-21 lead. The Varsity Reds would go on to win the set 25-22.

Montreal took a lead early in the third set, with the Varsity Reds forced to mount a comeback. At the technical timeout, the Carabins had a 16-11 lead over UNB.

Alves' serving continued to cause problems for the Carabins, earning five points for the Varsity Reds to tie the score at 16. Montreal answered with a couple of solid serves of their own to regain a three-point lead. Montreal went on to take the third set 25-20.

Montreal took control of the fourth set early and never looked back.

Strong serving by Gabriel Chancy(Montréal, QC), Mikael Dagenais(Montréal, QC) and UNB errors gave the Carabins the edge and the win by a score of 25-12.

Phillippe Carrier(Gatineau, QC) led the way for the Carabins, earning 15 points from 14 kills, and nine digs.

UNB was led by Tristen Burridge(Fort St. John, BC) and Fraser Doolittle(Toronto, ON), who had eight kills apiece.

UNB will take on Sherbrooke, Saturday morning at 11:00AM.

The Varsity Reds face Laval later on Saturday.
