Straight Sets Triumph

(FREDERICTON, NB) The scoreboard said the UNB Varsity Reds dominated. Most of those in the stands would likely agree. But, UNB head coach Dan McMorran doesn't see it that way.

"We're still not executing like we need to and we're still making far too many errors."

The Varsity Reds scored a straight sets win over the visiting Memorial University Seahawks, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.

UNB rarely trailed.

Eivind Andersen led the UNB attack, registering 12 kills and 8 digs. Pascal McCarthy added 7 kills and 4 digs.

Sam Burt and Jordan Murray each had 7 kills for the Seahawks.

"They are big, they are powerful, but we didn't get them out of system enough and they got us out of system too much," said Memorial coach Cisco Farrero. "Our guys played their tails off, but we didn't execute the first contact."

Fourth year middle Sam Alves, who had four kills for the VReds, believes the team needs to make adjustments. He says it can be simple. "Just talking with each other, making sure we're controlling what's on our side. Reassuring each other and making sure we keep in that positive mindset."

The two sides have little time to make adjustments. They meet again Sunday afternoon, at the Richard J. Currie Center.

"They're playing with a little bit more zest and life than they may have in previous years," says McMorran. "We need to have a bit better execution level."

The win moves UNB atop the Atlantic University Sport standings. The Varsity Reds are now 2-and-2. Memorial is now 0-and-4 on the season.

The Varsity Reds and Seahawks wrap up their weekend double-header on Sunday, at 1PM.
