UNB not unhappy over 3-2 loss to two-time CIS Champs
March 2, 2013
QUEBEC CITY – The Varsity Reds, relegated to the consolation round after yesterday’s loss to McMaster, today took on two-time CIS champions Trinity Western Spartans and led them a merry dance and all the way to the fifth set before losing three sets to two (25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 12-15).
It was the V-Reds team that we have come to know and love that took to the floor today with a spring in their step and confidence in their play. It was Julio Fernandez that put them on the board with a kill and right from that point on UNB never relinquished the lead. The set saw a couple of huge kills by Fernandez and big blocks from Craig Toonders and Eivind Andersen – set score 25-19.
The second set saw the teams’ trade point for point pretty much throughout the set. Spectators were treated to several nice skills by Marc White and Logan Keoughan while Matt Sweet came up with a huge dig to Fernandez who scored with his powerful kill shot. Fernandez also had a beautiful service ace as the ball just stayed in the back line. Unfortunately the Spartans took the set 25-23.
The third set was again point for point as the two teams engaged in several long rallies with neither team giving up to the other. Mathieu Losier showed off his dump shot but Trinity Western went on a four point spree at the end of the set to close it out with the win 25-20.
The tables turned for UNB when they came out strong again in the fourth and went on a six point run in the middle of the set. The Spartans were unable to get closer than two while the Varsity Reds stepped on the gas and took the set 25-20 and forcing the match to five.
Despite putting some big blocks up the Varsity Reds were unable to keep the Spartans at bay. Unfortunately someone has to win the match and an exciting fifth set could have gone either way. On this day it was the Spartans set and match – 15-12.
Coach McMorran was very pleased with the guys, “Yes I’m extremely pleased with our performance today. We were really excited to be playing against Trinity for the simple reason that we know the Canada West teams are traditionally the powerhouses here [at CIS].”
“What we wanted to do is learn as much as we can while we’re here,” continued McMorran. “We have some really young players in certain key positions and we feel they are going to be those CIS all Canadians and play at this level.”

Julio Fernandez 26-1-0
Marc White 13-1-1
Logan Keoughan 8-1-6
