(MONCTON, NB) A number of members of the UNB Reds women’s and men’s track and field team took part in the JS Open, January 11th, in Moncton.

The Reds used the one day meet to ease back into their season following the Christmas break and several days of intensive training.

On the men’s side, Ryan Olson established a new UNB record in winning the men’s high jump, with a leap of 1.96 metres.

Jarod Manuel won both the shot put and weight throw. In the weight throw, Manuel led a UNB sweep of the podium, with Thayne Hebb and Chris Grant finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Erin McCavour led the Reds’ women, winning the women’s high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Tavia Salkey finished 3rd in the women’s 60 metres. In her qualifying heat, Salkey ran a blistering 8.01 seconds, setting a new UNB record.

“Tavia has shown steady improvement,” said Reds head coach Chris Belof. “She’s someone to watch throughout the remainder of the season.”

“This was a good meet for our speed and power athletes,” said Belof.

The Reds are back in action this weekend, on January 18th, at the Saint John Track Club Open, in Saint John.
