REDS Adding deGoey To Class Of '25
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s swimming team is naming Matthew deGoey, of Prescott, Arizona, to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 18-year-old deGoey is a breaststroke and butterfly sprint specialist. He also swims freestyle events.
He’s signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport season.
“We’re excited to welcome Matthew, a powerhouse addition to our team,” said Marta Belsh, head coach of the REDS. “With the versatility to dominate in three different strokes, unmatched dedication, and a relentless work ethic, he’s a true all-rounder.”
deGoey is finishing his Grade 12 year at St. Michaels University School, in Victoria, BC, and is a veteran member of the Pacific Coast Swimming and University of Victoria swimming clubs.
Among his many accomplishments at the club competition level, a silver medal in the 18 & over 50-metre breaststroke at the 2025 British Columbia Winter Provincial Championships. He recorded a fifth-place finish in the 18 & over 50-metre butterfly at the same event.
deGoey is currently ranked in the top ten in men’s (18 & over) 50-metre breaststroke in British Columbia.
“I’m excited to be a member of the UNB REDS swim team and know that UNB has consistently ranked among the best Atlantic Canadian universities,” said deGoey. “With the caliber of swim team members and the top-notch coaching, I’m sure I’ll be able to reach my goals.”
This week, deGoey is competing at the 2025 Canadian Swimming Trials, in Victoria.
“He’s goal-driven and built for high performance,” said Coach Belsh. “REDS fans should get ready to see big things from this rising star.”
deGoey has set a first-year goal of qualifying for the U SPORTS Championships and has an eye on making finals at the national championships.
“I’m eager to bring my devotion, effort, and enthusiasm as a student-athlete to the REDS.”
deGoey will study Engineering while attending UNB.
