(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s swimming team is adding hometown standout Nicholas Duguay to their recruiting class of 2022.

The veteran member of the Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Team has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-23 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Nicholas is among a select group of high-performance swimmers in New Brunswick,” said REDS head coach Marta Belsh. “He’s a very good freestyler and is working hard to expand his skills in other sprint and middle-distance events. He’ll be a great addition to the team.”

The 17-year-old is finishing his Grade 12 year at Fredericton’s École Sainte Anne, where he’s been a key member of the Castors’ swim team for a number of seasons.

At the 2021 New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Southwest Regional Championships, Duguay won the varsity men’s 50 and 100 metre freestyle events and swam to a silver medal in the varsity men’s 100 metre butterfly.

“I’m a hard worker. I’m committed and I’ll be a supportive teammate,” said Duguay. “I want to continue to improve my times and become a stronger swimmer.”

Duguay helped Ecole Sainte Anne to top ten finishes in the men’s team and overall standings at the 2021-2022 provincial high school championships.

“I’ve worked with Nic for a while,” said Belsh. “He’s a hard-working and diligent athlete, but he’s also a kind and caring teammate and person.”

“I chose UNB because of the academic programs available to me, the great coaching and the fact I’m already familiar with some of my teammates,” said Duguay.

Duguay will study Arts while attending UNB.
