Men's Freestyle Relay 2nd At Acadia Meet

(WOLFVILLE, NS) UNB's Leah Smal raced to victory in the women's 50 metre freestyle event on Sunday, day two of the Jack Scholz Memorial Meet, at Acadia University.

Smal also finished third in the women's 100 metre butterfly, and helped the Reds to a third place finish in the women's 4-by-50 metre freestyle relay.

Smal's efforts helped the Reds to a third place finish in the team standings at the second meet on the Atlantic University Sport swimming schedule.

The Reds' men's 4-by-50 metre freestyle relay team of Erik Staeben, Zach Doiron, Ahmed Helal, and Noah Horwood took second place. The same foursome teamed to finish third in the men's 400-metre medley relay.

UNB posted seven top three finishes on day one of the event.

"It was a good competition for the team," said Reds head coach Marta Belsh. "Our goal is to swim more events at our championship meet, and to do that we need to try other events and see how we perform in them. This was good opportunity for us to try that and we had number of good performances with best times. This is very encouraging so early in the season."

The next meet on the AUS schedule is the Kemp-Fry Invitational, in Halifax. It takes place November 15-17, at Dalhousie University.
