Brandon Warren leads the way in the pool for the V-Reds

The UNB Varsity Reds swim teams dove into the Sir Max Aitken Pool on Saturday for their only home meet of the 2014-15 Atlantic University Sport season.

Playing host to swimmers from Mount Alison, Acadia, UPEI and Dalhousie, the Varsity Reds had a solid showing on day one of the annual Amby Legere AUS Invitational.
Men's swimmer Brandon Warren had a good day, finishing second in the men's 200m freestyle and third in the 1500m freestyle.

"Brandon Warren had two really good swims that were really close to his best times," said Varsity Reds head coach Robin Ferdinand.

One of the day's more anticipated events was the women's 50m backstroke featuring UNB's Charli LeBlanc. The rookie qualified for CIS nationals in the first meet of the season with a time of 30.03 in the event. On Saturday, LeBlanc fell just shy of that mark with a time of 30.88.

LeBlanc also went head-to-head against her sister, Jessica, in heat three of the women's 200m freestyle. Charli proved victorious in that matchup.

Jessica LeBlanc, meanwhile, had a solid showing in the women's 200m individual medley, finishing second.

Ferdinand said that since this meet is more about practice and training, some Varsity Reds swimmers are doing off events.

"This is kind of a training meet for us," said Varsity Reds head coach Robin Ferdinand. "It's more about getting up and racing."

"We started out a bit slow this afternoon but things got better and hopefully tomorrow will be an even faster day. We're pleased."

The Amby Legere AUS Invitational continues on Sunday morning at the Sir Max Aitken Pool. Warm-ups begin at 9 a.m. with competition running from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
