Three points for the V-Reds, and no points for the Panthers was the end result of their game today. It was their second victory of the weekend.
The men were able to nab another three points for the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) standings, pushing them to first place going into their final two games of the regular season.
"When it's a 3-0 game at that point, you know the other team is going to come out with an initial push and you've got to deal with that," said head coach Miles Pinsent.
"If you survive that then the game will kind of get played out, and that's kind of how it played through today."
Victor Karosan scored the first goal for the Reds, getting their momentum going.
"We started off good in the first 20 minutes, passing the ball around, we had three mid-fielders to their two, and we made a play out of it," said Karosan. "But then I just closed my eyes and took a shot."
The shot got them the first goal of three – all scored in the first half of the game. Teammates Benjamin Law and Marcus Lees scored the other two to take the win.
"It feels good because all of the season we haven't come out of a weekend with six points," he said. "So finally getting a perfect record over the weekend is good."
Karosan is in his in his third year with the Varsity Red men's soccer team. He first got into soccer because his older brother Eric Karosan played clubs while they lived in Montreal, and it seemed like a natural progression. Eric spent five of his own years with the V-Reds men's soccer team, and so family once again played a part in his soccer path.
"He had a good career, they won AUS, and they went to nationals and it was just sort of a given," he said. "It was always a good choice to come to UNB."
The only time he would be able to play on the same team as Eric was during their time with the Picaroons Reds.
"Finally we got to play together," he laughed.
His reasons to stay, however, were all his own.
"It was a good program, we were hosting nationals in two years' time – when I first got here – and a lot of good recruits came in," he said. "And, just a good group of players, and playing some good soccer."
The men sit first place in AUS and travel this weekend to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies, followed by the Dalhousie Tigers.
"Our goal from the beginning of the season was to get a bye into the playoffs, so just getting max points is good to stay in first and get the best seat possible."
