Men's soccer play to draw against Panthers
October 15, 2011
Amazing, is the only word to describe the first half play of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s soccer team in today's match against the UPEI Panthers. There was energy in the air even the fans could feel as the Reds controlled play against the Panthers.
In the first half, the Varsity Reds defensive lines held strong and tight as they challenged the Panthers who were trying to claw their way to the net; but it wasn’t to be for the Panthers. In the 23rd minute of play, with a beautiful charge, Shea Nordheim sniped the ball into the net, giving UNB a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers tried to answer back with a shot on net, but UNB keeper Aaron McMurray punched the ball out with a quality save, keeping the Varsity Reds in the lead.
By the second half, the Varsity Reds were still fighting the Panthers tooth and nail as they dug deep and controlled the play. With such a controlled play and beautiful passing by the Reds, Sam Boateng buried the second goal for UNB in the back of the net, putting the V-Reds up 2-0.
“I thought Sam Boateng, who scored for us, was a high man. He did a good job for us. I also though Ben Law who played in our midfield did a really good job containing things in the middle of the field today,” said UNB men’s soccer coach head coach Miles Pinsent.
Unfortunately by the 64th minute of play, the Panthers broke through the Varsity Reds back line, bringing the score to 2-1.
The V-Reds continued to keep their footing on the field, however, in the 90 minute, the Panthers evened the play, ending the game with 2-2.
The Varsity Reds will take to BMO Centre again tomorrow at 3:15 to challenge Cape Breton.
