REDS Win Jeffrey Game
(FREDERICTON, NB) Drew Elliott (Musquash, NB) and Cole MacKay (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) each scored twice to lead the UNB REDS over the UPEI Panthers 7-1 in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action, Wednesday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The game was the 32nd annual Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game, played in honour of former UNB men's hockey standout and coach, the late Mark Jeffrey.
The home team opened the scoring at the 9:52 mark of the opening period when Cody Morgan (Gilford, ON) managed to flip a puck over a sprawling Joe Ranger (Carp, PE).
The REDS made it 2-0 just 16 seconds later when Benjamin Corbeil (Granby, QC) stepped out from the corner and fired a wrist shot past Ranger.
The quick goals came on consecutive shots on the UPEI net.
But UNB's two-goal lead didn't last long.
Landon Clow (Kelvin Grove, PE) was sprung on a breakaway and scored at 15:21 to make it a 2-1 game.
In the second period Elliott and MacKay each scored their first of the night.
They both scored again in the third period along with Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON).
Elliott's second was a highlight reel goal. He scored one handed, on a backhand, unassisted.
Michael Petizian (Mississauga, ON), Oscar Plandowski (Halifax, NS), and Justin Nolet (Mississauga, ON) each had two assists for UNB.
Samuel Richard (Ste. Catherine, QC) made 20 saves on 21 shots for the win in the REDS' net while Ranger made 28 saves on 35 shots.
Before the game, Richard was presented with the prestigious Mark Jeffrey Memorial Award.
With the win the REDS are now 27-1-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and continue to lead the AUS.
The Panthers are now 9-18-0-2, good for sixth place.
Both teams wrap up their regular season schedules against l'Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus this coming weekend.
