(MONCTON, NB) Tyler Boland (St. John's, NL) scored twice and added an assist to lead the UNB Reds to a 7-3 win over Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus, on Saturday.
The Reds jumped on the hosts early… and often.
Brady Gilmour (Grafton, ON), Oliver Cooper (Fredericton, NB), Boland with his first, and Matthew Boucher (Los Angeles, Calif.) all scored in a span of less than five minutes, as UNB raced out to a 4-0 first period lead.
Boucher's goal, the eventual game winner, came just 14 seconds after Boland had made it 3-0.
Boland's first goal was the 100th regular season point of his Atlantic University Sport career.
"It's incredible to be able to reach that mark in a league as strong as the AUS," said Boland. "And for me and Kris to share the same accomplishment on the same night is special too."
Kris Bennett's (Brampton, ON) second of three assists on the night was the 100th regular season point of his AUS career.
Boland added his second goal in the second period, and Stephen Anderson (Morell, PE) made it a 6-0 game mid-way through the second frame.
Moncton then scored three straight, cutting UNB's lead in half, before Mark Simpson (Rothesay, NB) rounded out the scoring.
"This win was important for us," said Boland. "With the league as tight as it is, every point is crucial, so coming out of the weekend with four points is important."
Samuel Harvey made 24 saves on 27 shots to earn the win in the UNB net.
Etienne Montpetit (Valleyfield, QC) allowed six goals on 25 shots, taking the loss for Moncton. Alexei Thibaudeau (Riverview, NB) came on mid-way through the second period, and allowed just one goal on 13 shots.
The win moved the Reds into a tie with Acadia atop the AUS standings. The Reds have a game in hand on the Axemen.
The Reds will play that game on Tuesday, at UPEI. That game was originally scheduled for November 16th, but was re-scheduled when inclement weather made bus travel to Prince Edward Island impossible.
Moncton's next action comes Friday, when they host Saint Mary's.
