(FREDERICTON, NB) The Peterbilt Atlantic Pete Kelly Cup is staying in Fredericton.
The UNB Varsity Reds completed a two-game sweep of the York University Lions with a 6-1 win, Friday.
Stephen Anderson(Morell, PE) scored three goals to lead the Varsity Reds.
"My goals, I didn't have to work too hard for them," said Anderson. "I had some lucky bounces and some good passes. I just tried to stay in the good areas and tonight it paid off."
Anderson was named the Peterbilt Atlantic Player of the Game for UNB and a tournament all-star.
Greg Milner(Watford, ON) scored the Lions' lone goal and was named York's Peterbilt Atlantic Player of the Game.
Philippe Halley(Quebec City, QC) scored once and added three assists for the Varsity Reds.
Cam Braes(Shawnigan Lake, BC) and Cameron Brace(Markham, ON) also scored for UNB.
Alex Dubeau(Mascouche, QC) stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced to earn the win in the UNB net.
Dubeau was named to the tournament all-star team, along with Halley and defenceman Marcus McIvor(Whitby, ON).
Lions' defenceman Shayne Rover(Newmarket, ON) and forward Trevor Petersen(Thornhill, ON) were also named tournament all-stars.
"We'll be a better team because of this," said York head coach Chris Dennis. "They've got a lot of depth and they showed that tonight. I thought we played really hard, both games. I thought we competed."
Varsity Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall, happy with the win, feels the exhibition series will help ready his team for the second half of their season.
"You can get the little details in a game, in game situations, that you can't always get in practice," he said.
For Lions' forwards Bryce Milson(Miramichi, NB) and Steve Janes(Etobicoke, ON), the Pete Kelly Cup was a homecoming.
Both skated last season with the St. Thomas University Tommies.
Milson says it's good to be part of a competitive team.
"It's not like we were just happy to play with them," he said. "We wanted to come out and be good too. I think we competed the first game. We let this game get away from us, but we were pleased with the effort we gave."
The Varsity Reds resume the Atlantic University Sport regular season on Friday, when they host the St. FX X-Men.
Anderson feels the team is ready.
"We finished the first half solidly, after the little hiccup in Nova Scotia, and I think we're just looking forward to keeping it going in the second half."
Friday's game is scheduled for a 7:00PM face-off.
