(ST. JOHN'S, NL) UNB's Jack Smeltzer rink scored their first win at the 2019 Subway Atlantic University Sport Curling Championships, on Friday.

The Reds scored twice in the first end and stole another two in the second, on route to a 7-1 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks, in six ends.

"The first win is good to get under your belt," said Smeltzer. "Obviously, it's a little late, but better late than never."

It was the first win for the Smeltzer foursome, after two earlier losses.

"We were just more of a team. We threw it a bit better, figured out the ice," he said.

On the women's side of the competition, UNB's Justine Comeau scored two in the tenth end to beat Mount Allison 9-7 and improve to 4-and-0.

The Reds trailed the Mounties 5-2 after five ends.

"I'm feeling really good," said Comeau. "We struggled a little bit today, but we were able to find a way, in both games, and pull out the win. That's really promising and I'm really happy with how it's turned out.

Earlier in the day, the Comeau rink beat Memorial 9-5.

Both Reds rinks play their final round-robin games on Saturday morning, at 9:30am Atlantic.

The women face Dal, while the men take on St FX.

The AUS semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday evening.

The AUS title games go on Sunday.
