Sears To Join REDS

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s basketball team is adding 6’3” guard Anthony Sears to their recruiting class of 2022.

The 19-year-old, from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-2023 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Anthony is another great addition to our 2022 recruiting class,” said REDS head coach Joe Salerno. “He adds some much-needed athleticism to our backcourt, and the potential to be a lock down defender at the AUS level. Physically, he’s ready to compete at the U SPORTS level, which was something else that was extremely impressive about him.”

Sears has recently finished his Grade 12 year at Rothesay Netherwood School, where he was a veteran member of the Riverhawks’ team that competes in the National Preparatory Association, one of the most competitive prep leagues in North America.

“I’ll bring energy, leadership and competitiveness,” said Sears. “I’m athletic, a lockdown defender and slasher who can shoot and create for my teammates.”

Sears has also been a member of Basketball Nova Scotia’s U17 program and has played in the East Coast Basketball Academy’s competitive league.

“He’s a high character young man who understands what it means to put the team first and who will compete on a daily basis,” said Salerno. “He has the potential to be a very good player in our league, and I look forward to see his continued growth over the next several years.”

“The REDS don’t seem like an average team,” said Sears. “They’re more of a family and everyone wants to win, just like me.”

Sears says his short-term goal will be to have a positive impact on the team. Longer term, he’d like to help bring an AUS Championship back to UNB and take the REDS to the national championship tournament.

Sears will study Mechanical Engineering while attending UNB.
