UNB Varsity Reds clinch two more points; still in search of play-off spot
February 17, 2013
The Varsity Reds came out on top again tonight as they defeated the Memorial Sea Hawks 86-58 to give them a pair of wins on the weekend.
UNB were the first to post points on the board with two from rookie Mark Matheson who is having an excellent rookie campaign.
Dan Quiron did not start this game but subbed in at the six minute mark of the first quarter and was quickly fouled by Vasilije Curcic. Six foot four Jordan Irvine played all 10 minutes of the first half sinking two key three-pointers and helping finish the first quarter with a six point lead - 22-18.
In the second quarter UNB was able to pull away from MUN posting another 18 points to MUN’s 14. Fazzolari did a good job in this quarter guarding MUN’s big Curcic and MUN needing to stop the UNB offence to get back into the game.
Half time score 40-32.
In the beginning of the third quarter Daley comes up with a big steal and an easy lay-up; Daley is among the leaders in AUS steals with over two steals per game. With a hot shooting start to the third quarter UNB was able to build up their lead on the Sea Hawks as their forward Noel Moffat runs amok with foul trouble and are unable to find the basket.
Points in the third UNB 33 MUN 14
Score after the third 73-46
In the fourth and final quarter the Varsity Reds continued their dominance of the game opening up the lead by 30 points at times. Jordan Irvine proved to be a big physical presence in this game and also not scared to shoot the three ball – with two three pointers on the night. Fourth quarter score 13 UNB 12 MUN.
Final score 86-58
“Jordan played really well – he had 30 points last night and 13 today but his defense was really consistent today,” said Baker.
“I’m not sure where all the three point shooting came from in the third quarter and that there all year. That third quarter we must have hit 5 or 6 threes – that was a big turning point in the game.”
Named player of the game for UNB Will McFee once again led the Varsity Reds in points with 27. He is now in first place in the AUS in field goals with 125, is second in three pointers with 47 and is in first place total points with 355.
The Varsity Reds travel to Cape Breton next weekend for a pair of games and while CBU is in first place in the AUS coach Baker believes it’s possible to steal a game and possibly make playoffs. “Yes, we are still in the hunt – we need a little help from some of the other teams, mathematically we’re still in the mix,” said Baker.
