The UNB Reds/Valley Graphics female athlete of the month, for February, is Leah Smal, from the women’s swimming team.

Smal earned seven medals at the Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, in Halifax, February 8-10.

She swept the women’s backstroke events, winning gold in the 50, 100 and 200 metre events, and took silver in the women’s 50 metre freestyle.

Smal helped UNB earn silver in the women’s 400 metre freestyle relay, and bronze medals in the 400 metre medley relay and 800 metre freestyle relay.

“Leah was incredible that weekend,” said Reds head coach Robin Ferdinand. “She dominated the backstroke events, all in UNB record times, closing in on AUS records.”

At the U SPORTS Swimming Championships, in Vancouver, February 21-23, Smal was 6th overall in the women’s 100 metre backstroke, 7th in 50 metre backstroke, and 8th in the 200 metre backstroke.
